Sport Is Health :

It is worth noting that physical activity is beneficial for health. But what exactly are these benefits? What health problems can prevent a sport? Dr. Bruno Sesboüé, deputy secretary general of the French Society of Sports Medicine and Head of Sports Medicine of the University Hospital of Caen says these indications and cons-indications to practice a sport.

What are the benefits of playing sports ?

The first advantage is fun! For me, this is the most important thing. Regarding health, the benefits of sport are too numerous to mention exhaustively. It may be noted, among other positive effects for the cardiovascular system. Sport lowers blood pressure and myocardial problems, increasing the strength and heart function. In the lungs, it increases lung capacity and slightly above provides good ventilation. The practice of physical activity also has effects on the skeleton: it protects particularly against osteoporosis. It also increases muscle mass and can be used in combination with a suitable diet, reduce fat mass. This helps to prevent diabetes, especially diabetes fat. Sport maintains and improves reflexes, thereby preventing falls in the elderly.

We believe that sport improves life expectancy. What is certain is that physical activity improves quality of life. In addition, sports a psychosocial role: it enhances self-esteem, allows integration with a social environment and prevents problems of isolation.

What cons-indications may prevent the practice of a sport ?

There are not many cons-indications. The cons-indication essential for heart problems, especially the "barriers to eject" (which prevent blood from leaving the heart). Certain muscular diseases may require a suitable practice. Skeletal fragility can discourage sports with risk of falls or shocks. In general, it is always possible to provide adequate physical activity for each person.

A medical examination is it necessary to start a sport ?

To start in a sport licensee, a prior medical examination is mandatory. It allows the issuance of a certificate of non-cons and must be renewed each year. The first review then allows enrollment in a club within 120 days. Renewal is valid for 180 days. Every physician is authorized to issue a certificate of non-cons, except for sports deemed at risk (motorsports, skydiving, diving ...) that need the advice of a doctor approved by the relevant sports federation. You should know that the medical examination of non-cons is not reimbursed by social security.
For athletes, medical monitoring is very thorough (exams resting electrocardiogram, echocardiography ...). For unlicensed sports, participation in a sporting event (Paris marathon for example) requires a medical certificate of less than three months.
